Editor’s Letter: Welcome To The New Travelista

I want to start by saying a huge warm welcome to the new Travelista, an online publication and community for the adventurous modern woman. The fact you’re reading this means that the site is now live and the thought of that makes my stomach flip with excitement. This new website and rebrand is something I’ve been working on since the start of 2023, when I pitched for and won a small business grant to evolve my business. But its an idea I’ve dreamt of doing for years.

Where it all began

Ten years ago, I created a blog on the internet called The Travelista. As an optimistic Media graduate, I had dreams of one day becoming the Editor of a glossy magazine, but print magazines were on the decline and the world of digital content and marketing was on the brink of eruption.

Eager to write, get my work published and ultimately become a travel journalist, creating a blog felt like a no-brainer. It was a way to build a portfolio of my writing and transition into the online world. That’s the thing. Back then it was all about the writing, and I loved it. This was long before the creation of Instagram, the rise of YouTube and the trends of TikTok. Back then people came to your blog for the words (and a few grainy, heavily filtered photos to accompany).

I really had no idea that my blog would evolve into a business, win awards and ultimately become the catalyst that enabled me to travel the world. It has taken me to places like Guatemala, Belize, South Africa, Canada, Mexico and Antigua. For a few years I travelled over seas every month of the year, with my feet barely touching the ground. The opportunities and experiences that came from the blog have been nothing short of incredible, and I will forever be grateful for that exciting, adventure-filled season of my life.

Reaching 10 years

Life has changed a lot since then. I am a Mother. I own a house. I have roots and a lot more responsibilities. As I began to approach the blog’s 10 year anniversary, I began to wonder, what’s next? Am I going to be a blogger forever? Where is the progression, what is my next step and how will it fit with my lifestyle? The ‘Editor’ dream was still in the back of my mind, but I realised I was already sitting on my own publication and media business, albeit in blog form.

In early 2023 my personal life turned upside down after the end of my 8 year relationship and the cancellation of our wedding. Although this was incredibly hard, it also lit a fire in me and felt like the start of a beautiful rebirth. I realised this was the time to take the leap, for myself, for my son and for our future. I decided to redesign my entire life both personally and professionally – when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

“This is my lemonade – and I’m so proud of it.”

The vision for the new Travelista

My vision was to create an online publication and community for women who love to travel, but have grown up beyond their early 20’s. Gone are the days of gap years and backpacking. Like me, they are juggling things like motherhood, careers, homes and relationships alongside their passion for travel. Like me, they’ve been left wondering how travel and adventure can still fit into their busy lives, when the modern world demands so much of them. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

“It’s not easy, but I think a lot of is down to mindset and adaptability; believing that your cravings and need for adventure can still be met throughout all seasons of life. It may just look a little different to how it did in the last season.”

Perhaps realising you can still achieve a sense of escapism by booking a spa break 30 minutes from home. Perhaps it’s realising you can feed your sense of adventure by hiking in the Peak District as well as hiking Mount Batur, Bali. Perhaps it’s learning how to travel with a toddler after years of blissfully relaxing adult-only holidays. Perhaps it’s being newly single, saying sod it and booking your first solo holiday to that place you always wanted to go. We can all evolve and adapt and the Travelista community will be cheering you on for it all.

“Fulfilling your sense of adventure = making yourself a priority. How can you show up for everyone else if you don’t fill up your own cup first?”

So what’s new?

Expanding with lifestyle categories

As a way to honour the juggle of womanhood, Travelista now covers new additional lifestyle topics alongside it’s core theme of travel. These include style, family, home, career and wellbeing. I have chosen these pillars as I feel they represent all of the many plates that women are spinning. We will feature interviews, expert advice, hacks and tips within these categories to make life feel just that little bit easier.

A community of contributors

One of the biggest changes between the old blog and the new online publication, is that it is now a collective rather than a one-man show. It’s no longer a personal blog, with articles written by only me. I now have a small, but growing, team of contributors, and I also want to offer this as a platform for women in the community to write about and promote things they care about. I will still write many of the articles you see on the site and my most popular travel guides and itineraries have been carried through from the old blog. But I am excited for my articles to sit alongside writing from a diverse collection of adventurous modern women

If you are interested in becoming a regular contributor or would like to submit some some writing or content as a one-off, please email me editor@thetravelista.net.

The community aspect of Travelista will be developed further in 2024 when we will launch a closed community platform, forums and a programme of incredible trips. Be sure to subscribe to stay up to date with all of these exciting developments.

Instagram

You may also notice @thetravelista Instagram account has had a makeover, with our new branding and bio now in place. You can still expect to see me behind the account, but there will also be takeovers from our team of contributors from time to time. I’ve also set up my own personal Instagram account @jessicaruthgibson so that I can still share a more raw and real time perspective, when the mood takes me! I’d love you to follow both accounts.

I think that’s everything there is to know for now. Please take some time to explore the new site and don’t forget to subscribe. Welcome to this new online community, for people like you, the adventurous modern woman.
