Norwegian Fjords Cruise Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Travelista Editor Jessica Ruth Gibson shares why her first taste of Nordic cruising completely changed her perception of what a cruise could be, along with everything you need to know before planning a magical Norwegian Fjords cruise.
I’ve been lucky enough to have experienced 4 cruises in total so far. Of all the landscapes, of all the cruises, gliding down the Oslofjord remains the most memorable. My first ever cruise was part of a wider 10 day Scandinavian cruise itinerary through Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen. It was my first glimpse of Norway’s breathtaking landscapes and gave me a real hunger to return and explore more on a dedicated Norwegian Fjords cruise.
I still remember waking early as our ship quietly approached the fjord, opening the balcony doors to crisp morning air and watching tiny wooded islands and colourful cabins drift past in almost complete silence. I noticed little wooden saunas on the waters edge and jetties with ladders down into the water. It felt peaceful, unspoilt and unlike anywhere I’d travelled before.

That first taste of a Norwegian Fjord left me with a real hunger to return and experience more. It also completely changed my perception of cruising. It made me realise that cruises aren’t just about chasing warmer weather. They’re also one of the best ways to explore destinations you might never have considered visiting for a standalone holiday.
If you’re thinking about booking a Norwegian Fjords cruise, this guide covers everything you need to know; from the best time to visit and what to pack, to the routes, ports and onboard experiences that make cruising through Norway such an unforgettable adventure.

1. What to expect on a Norwegian Fjords cruise
A Norwegian Fjords cruise offers a completely different experience to the classic beach-focused itineraries many people associate with cruising. Rather than hopping between sun-soaked ports, you’ll spend your days sailing through dramatic fjords, passing towering cliff faces, cascading waterfalls and remote waterside towns.
The pace of a Norwegian Fjords cruise is calm and relaxed. Whilst enjoying all the comforts of your cruise, you’ll get to wake up to a new location and ever-changing scenery every day. Cruising is the only way you can see so much of the spectacular Norwegian Fjords, whilst only ever having to unpack a suitcase once.
On your port days, you’ll step off the ship to explore ports such as Stavanger, Olden and Flåm. Simply roam independently or book on to one of the many shore excursions available through your cruise operator. Most Norwegian Fjords cruises are seasonal, so you’ll likely be cruising between April and September, when longer daylight hours, milder weather and flowing waterfalls create the best conditions for scenic cruising. Cruise durations typically range from seven-night voyages to longer 10- or 14-night itineraries. We’ll cover more about those later in this guide.

Typical Norwegian Fjords cruise durations:
- 7 nights: Perfect for a first fjords cruise, usually visiting three or four Norwegian ports.
- 10 nights: Allows more time to explore a wider variety of fjords and coastal towns.
- 12–14 nights: Ideal if you want a more in-depth itinerary, often combining the fjords with other Scandinavian destinations.
2. Popular Norwegian Fjords cruise itineraries
jOne of the biggest advantages of a Norwegian Fjords cruise is that they can be experienced in as little as 7 days, and if you’re also based in the UK, some cruise lines offer a no-fly option departing from Southampton. Alternatively, other routes commonly start from Copenhagen, Hamburg, Kiel or Warnemünde, giving you even more choice of routes and cruise lines. Check out these Norwegian Fjords cruises to get an idea of some of the most popular cruise routes.
Here are the closest airports to each departure port:
- Southampton UK > Southampton Airport CPH
- Copenhagen, Denmark > Copenhagen Airport (CPH))
- Hamburg, Germany > Hamburg Airport (HAM))
- Kiel, Germany > Hamburg Airport (HAM))
- Warnemünde > Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)*)
*Berlin Brandenburg is the nearest major international airport. Rostock-Laage Airport is closer but offers significantly fewer international flight connections.
The exact itinerary will vary depending on your cruise line and voyage length, but most Norwegian Fjords cruises typically visit a selection of Norway’s most scenic ports. Common stops include Bergen, famous for its colourful Bryggen waterfront; Flåm, home to the spectacular Flåm Railway; Geiranger, renowned for its UNESCO-listed fjord and dramatic waterfalls; Olden, the gateway to the Briksdal Glacier; Ålesund, celebrated for its striking Art Nouveau architecture; and Stavanger, where visitors can explore the historic old town or take an excursion to the iconic Pulpit Rock.
It’s also common for Norwegian Fjords itineraries to include one or more sea days, where you’ll spend the entire day sailing rather than docking in port. Unlike many other cruise destinations, these are often among the highlights of the trip, giving you time to admire the ever-changing scenery from the deck or your balcony, enjoy the ship’s restaurants, spa and entertainment, and simply slow down as you cruise through one of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Common Norwegian Fjords cruise itineraries
- 7 nights from Southampton → Stavanger → Olden → Haugesund → Southampton (often including scenic fjord cruising en route)
- 7 nights from Southampton → Stavanger → Olden → Flåm → Haugesund → Southampton
- 7 nights from Copenhagen → Flåm → Geiranger → Bergen → Copenhagen
- 10 nights from Hamburg → Bergen → Geiranger → Ålesund → Stavanger → Hamburg
Please note that ports of call and voyage durations vary between cruise lines and itineraries.
3. Is a Norwegian Fjords cruise right for me?
A Norwegian Fjords cruise is ideal for travellers who love spectacular scenery, spending time outdoors and discovering destinations at a slower pace. While temperatures are generally cooler than Mediterranean cruises, you’ll often be rewarded with crisp blue skies, fresh air and some of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes. Instead of packing beachwear for days spent sunbathing, think layers, waterproofs and comfortable walking shoes for exploring Norway’s picturesque towns, viewpoints and walking trail
Before my first Scandinavian cruise, I’d always imagined cruising as a sunshine holiday. Norway completely changed that perception. I found myself spending far more time admiring the scenery than searching for a sun lounger, and it reminded me that cruising can be one of the best ways to experience destinations you might not otherwise consider visiting independently. If you’re looking for dramatic landscapes, slower travel and a holiday that’s as much about the journey as the destinations, a Norwegian Fjords cruise could be exactly what you’re looking for.

A Norwegian Fjords cruise could be perfect for you if you:
- Love spectacular natural scenery and dramatic landscapes.
- Enjoy cooler climates and exploring the outdoors.
- Prefer sightseeing and nature over beach holidays.
- Like the idea of unpacking once while visiting multiple destinations.
- Enjoy photography, hiking or scenic rail journeys.
- Want to experience a different side of cruising beyond traditional sunshine itineraries.
4. What to expect onboard a Norwegian Fjords cruise ship
While every cruise line is different, most Norwegian Fjords cruise ships are designed to make the scenery the star of the show. Expect balcony rooms, plenty of outdoor deck space, comfortable lounges with panoramic windows and a choice of restaurants, bars and cafés where you can relax between ports. Depending on your cruise line and ship, you’ll also find a variety of cabin types, theatres with evening entertainment, fitness centres, children’s facilities and organised shore excursions, with some ships offering destination talks and enrichment programmes to help you learn more about the places you’ll be visiting.
Don’t let the cooler temperatures fool you into thinking you’ll be confined indoors. Many cruise ships feature heated swimming pools, whirlpools and hot tubs that can be enjoyed throughout the day, whatever the weather. One of my favourite memories from my own Scandinavian cruise was relaxing in a steaming outdoor hot tub with a drink in hand as we quietly sailed through the Oslofjord – it was a completely different experience to lounging beside a pool in the Mediterranean, but every bit as memorable.
If wellness is priority on your holidays, many ships also feature luxurious indoor spas, complete with thermal suites, saunas, steam rooms and treatment rooms, offering the perfect place to unwind after a day ashore. Facilities vary between cruise lines and ships, so it’s always worth checking what’s available before you book, particularly if access to heated outdoor pools, indoor spa facilities or wellness experiences is high on your wish list.

Typical onboard facilities include:
- A choice of inside, ocean view, balcony and suite cabins.
- Multiple restaurants, cafés and bars.
- Heated pools, hot tubs and wellness facilities (varies by ship).
- Spa and beauty treatments.
- Theatre shows and live entertainment.
- Fitness centre and sports facilities.
- Kids’ clubs and family-friendly activities.
- Shore excursions and destination experiences.
- Observation lounges and panoramic viewing areas.
5. When is the best time to go on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?
The Norwegian Fjords cruise season typically runs from April to September, with each month offering a slightly different experience. For the warmest weather and longest daylight hours, aim for June to August. If you’d prefer fewer crowds and beautiful spring or autumn scenery, May and September are excellent alternatives.
| Month | Average temperature | What to expect |
| April | 4–10°C | Fewer crowds, snow-capped mountains and the start of the cruise season. |
| May | 8–15°C | Spring flowers, quieter ports and longer days. |
| June | 11–18°C | Long daylight hours and lush green landscapes. |
| July | 13–20°C | Warmest month and peak cruise season. |
| August | 13–19°C | Mild temperatures and excellent sightseeing conditions. |
| September | 9–16°C | Autumn colours, fewer visitors and a more relaxed atmosphere. |
6. What to pack for a Norwegian Fjords cruise
Packing for a Norwegian Fjords cruise is all about being prepared for changing weather. Even during the summer months, you can experience sunshine, cooler temperatures and the occasional shower in the same day, so lightweight layers are your best friend.
Norwegian Fjords cruise packing checklist:
- Lightweight, packable waterproof jacket
- Compact travel umbrella
- Warm jumper or fleece for cooler evenings
- T-shirts and breathable layers
- Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
- Smart-casual outfits for evenings on board
- Formal wear (if your cruise includes formal nights)
- Activewear for walks, hikes and shore excursions
- Hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- SPF sunscreen
- SPF lip balm
- Swimwear for heated pools, hot tubs and spa facilities
- Small backpack or daypack for shore excursions
- Reusable water bottle
- Portable power bank for long days ashore
- eSIM to avoid expensive roaming charges and relying on cruise ship Wi-Fi
- Blister plasters
- Camera or smartphone with plenty of storage for photos
- Binoculars for spotting waterfalls, wildlife and distant scenery (optional)

7. Is a balcony cabin worth it?
If your budget allows, I’d highly recommend booking a balcony cabin for a Norwegian Fjords cruise. One of my favourite memories from my own Scandinavian cruise was waking early as we quietly sailed down the Oslofjord, opening the balcony doors to crisp morning air and watching tiny wooded islands, colourful cabins and forested coastline drift silently past. It gave me a front-row seat to some of Norway’s most beautiful scenery without even having to leave my cabin.
That said, if you’re on a budget, don’t worry. I’ve stayed in an entry level internal cabin before on a two week cruise around the Med and the size was very generous. We didn’t spend much time in the cabin beyond sleeping, but that’s ok as every cruise ship has outdoor viewing decks and panoramic lounges where you can enjoy the scenery throughout the voyage. However, if you’re deciding where to spend your budget, I’d personally prioritise a balcony cabin for a Norwegian Fjords cruise more than I would on many other cruise itineraries, simply because the spectacular landscapes are such a memorable part of the experience.

8. The Best Shore Excursions on a Norwegian Fjords cruise
One of the highlights of a Norwegian Fjords cruise is stepping ashore to experience Norway’s dramatic landscapes up close. Depending on your itinerary, popular excursions include riding the famous Flåm Railway, taking sightseeing boat trips through the fjords, visiting glaciers such as Briksdal Glacier, kayaking on peaceful waters, taking guided hikes to panoramic viewpoints, wildlife spotting and exploring colourful waterfront towns. Many ports are also home to charming cafés, independent shops and local markets, making them enjoyable to explore at your own pace if you’d prefer a more relaxed day ashore.
Whether you need to book an organised excursion depends on the port and what you’d like to experience. Many town centres, such as Bergen and Ålesund, are easily explored independently on foot, while attractions further afield—such as glaciers, mountain viewpoints or famous hikes—often require transport or a guided tour to make the most of your time in port. If there’s a particular excursion on your bucket list, it’s worth pre-booking in advance of your cruise, especially during the peak summer months when the most popular tours can sell out quickly.

9. Wildlife you might see on a Norwegian Fjords cruise
While the breathtaking scenery is undoubtedly the star of the show, it’s worth keeping an eye out for Norway’s incredible wildlife too. Depending on the season and your itinerary, you may spot seabirds soaring above the cliffs, seals resting along the shoreline, porpoises and dolphins swimming alongside the ship, and even whales on some northern routes. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them – you never know what might appear as you sail through the fjords.
On land, Norway is also home to reindeer, elk, mountain goats and a wide variety of birdlife, although sightings are more likely during shore excursions than from the ship itself. The quieter moments spent out on deck often become some of the most memorable, so don’t forget to look beyond the dramatic landscapes every now and then.
10. Frequently asked questions about Norwegian Fjord cruises
How long is a Norwegian Fjords cruise?
Most Norwegian Fjords cruises last between 7 and 14 nights, although shorter and longer itineraries are also available. Seven nights is ideal for a first cruise, while longer voyages allow you to explore more of Norway’s spectacular coastline.
Do I need a visa for Norway?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and where you’re travelling from. Always check the latest government travel advice before booking or travelling.
Is a Norwegian Fjords cruise suitable for first-time cruisers?
Yes, Norwegian Fjords cruises are a great choice for first-time cruisers thanks to their relaxed pace and breathtaking scenery. They also offer a good balance of time ashore and time to enjoy the ship’s facilities.
Will I get seasick on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?
The fjords themselves are generally calm, making for smooth and scenic sailing. Sea conditions can be rougher when crossing the North Sea, although modern cruise ships are well equipped to handle changing weather.
Can you see the Northern Lights on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?
Classic Norwegian Fjords cruises usually operate between spring and early autumn, when the Northern Lights aren’t visible. If seeing the aurora is on your bucket list, consider a dedicated Northern Lights cruise during the winter months.
Do I need to book shore excursions in advance?
Popular excursions, such as the Flåm Railway or glacier tours, often sell out during peak season, so it’s worth booking ahead. Many ports can also be explored independently if you prefer a more flexible day ashore. You can book with your cruise line or independently via trusted global tour side GetYourGuide.
Are Norwegian Fjords cruises family friendly?
Yes, many cruise lines offer family-friendly facilities, children’s clubs and activities suitable for all ages. There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy Norway’s spectacular scenery together, both on board and ashore.

What currency is used in Norway?
Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK), although credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the country – as well as Apple Pay. It’s still worth carrying a small amount of local currency for smaller purchases, just in case.
Can I use my mobile phone in Norway?
Roaming charges vary depending on your mobile provider, so it’s worth checking before you travel. An eSIM can be a convenient and often more affordable way to stay connected while exploring ashore.
