Review: Checking into Waterloo Place, Edinburgh

What is it that really helps you to get a good night’s sleep? There are so many studies on this subject, but the studies all seem to say something different. What works for one person may not work for another, but the guys at Apex Hotels are pretty confident that they’ve found a winning formula. This October I travelled to Edinburgh with my boyfriend Scott to take part in Apex Hotel’s #HitSnooze campaign. It was my job to test out their formula for a great nights’ sleep, so we checked in to the stylish Apex Waterloo Place for a hotel lock-in of epic proportions. This post is also a giveaway, so be sure to leave a comment on this post to WIN a 1-night stay for 2 including breakfast at the Apex Hotel of your choice.

Our #HitSnooze HQ

After a full day of exploring Edinburgh, it was time to spend our first night in the city at Apex Waterloo Place. Earlier that day we checked into the hotel and got a first glimpse of our beautiful Duplex Suite. With a dining area, study, lounge area and top floor bedroom, it felt so much more homely than your average hotel room. The king size bed was luxurious, plush and dressed in the softest linen. I am so picky when it comes to hotel beds but this one ticked all my boxes. If I was going to get a good night’s sleep anywhere, it had to be here.

The Sleep Kit

Waiting for us in the room was a beautiful sleep kit with little extras to help get a good night’s sleep. This was a one-off kit they had put together just for me, which made me realise the level of attention that goes on at Apex Waterloo Place. The kit included some luxurious miniature toiletries an adjustable eye mask and some soothing chamomile tea (caffeine free and perfect to sip before bedtime). The kit also came with a list of top tips to a great night’s sleep by Lisa Artis at The Sleep Council. The surprise sleep kit was so thoughtful and it really added to the sleep-focused experience.

An Evening Spa Session

On my first night in a new city I usually can’t wait to get out and hit a local restaurant and some bars. It felt strange to be staying in the hotel all night, but not having to get ready and decide where to go definitely helped me to relax. My evening began with a swim in the hotel pool, followed by a back, neck and shoulder hot stone massage at PURE Spa & Beauty.

Usually after a massage you need to pick yourself up and continue with your day, but having this treatment in the evening allowed me to stay in my hazy state of relaxation. Apex Waterloo Place is one of the few luxury hotels in Edinburgh that is home to a spa, complete with indoor pool, steam room, sauna and treatment rooms.

A Light Supper at Elliot’s

As it was a ‘lock-in’, we ordered from the fixed-price menu at Elliot’s (Apex Waterloo Place’s signature restaurant). I opted for Serrano wrapped Hake, which was light but incredibly tasty. The waiters were both friendly and professional and really set the bar in terms of service at Apex Waterloo Place.

Switching off Technology

I wanted to share my experience on social media, so I had been taking photos, tweeting and posting Instagram stories throughout the whole day. It’s part of my job, but I knew that being wired to my technology wouldn’t help when it came to drifting off to sleep. Scott and I followed the tips in my sleep kit and made a conscious decision to ‘switch off all technology 1 hour before bed’. With phones away and the TV off, we shared a bubble bath in the huge freestanding tub. It was bliss!

The Morning After

I woke up at around 9am, which definitely felt like a bit of a lie-in for me. We snoozed until about 9.30am to make the most of the gorgeous king size bed. It felt lazy but so nice at the same time! We started our second day with a hearty Eggs Benedict breakfast and wonderfully friendly service at Elliot’s.

The Verdict

I slept through the whole night without any disturbance and definitely think the sleep I got was deep, quality sleep. I definitely think that the ‘lock-in’ ritual had contributing factors that helped me to sleep well, including the evening massage, the bubble bath, the technology cut-off and the king size bed. The whole experience at Apex Waterloo Place was an indulgent treat, but still included small changes that I can maintain at home.

I’d love to go to Edinburgh,
    And visit the medieval old,
It’s my first Christmas without my dad,
And it’s sure to make me smile not frown,

I’d love to visit the vintage boutiques and buy a cosy Scottish knit,
Or take a hike up to a beautiful vantage point, hopefully I’m not too unfit!

An architecture fan and a gallery lover,
I’d love to immerse myself in art for the day,
Pop into cute coffee shops and tuck into a cake,
Please pick me and my bae! ( cringe I used that word!)

I would love to stay at the Apex Hotel in Edinburgh. First of all, your pictures of it looked like luxury hotel heaven! But more importantly, I would love to take my mum. Despite living in Newcastle, and her driving me from Newcastle to Edinburgh Airport multiple times a year (hello cheaper flights), she has never actually visited Edinburgh. She is a star and deserves a little bit of luxury (who’s mum doesn’t).

  • I’d actually love to stay at this property – Apex Waterloo Place in Edinburgh! I’m from Los Angeles and I visit my friend in Edinburgh every year. This would be such a nice treat for us. Generous giveaway, thanks for sharing 🙂

  • I’m doing some research that involves London history and the Law, so Temple Court in London is the one that grabs me. Watching an old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes the other day got me thinking I’d like to see Doctor Johnson’s house too, which is close. I used to cycle round there at weekends, just blundering around, about twenty years back So…one dark and misty night in old London Town it’d be nice to revisit, and do some exploring……!

  • Katherine Lawson

I’d really love to win a stay at the Bath Apex hotel … I visited Bath eons ago as a backpacker from Canada and fell in love with it, but haven’t been back since. I now live in London and have been thinking about going back to Bath to jog some good memories!

  • I’d love a wee break in the Glasgow Apex – with a young baby and 4 year old, I definitely could do with a night to myself for me and hubby. I love the vibe in Glasgow with its architecture and culture and it would be great to let my hair down for a night!

  • I would love to go to the Apex Temple Court Hotel in London. The bedrooms are bright and beautiful, the courtyard is ideal to take a breather and then there’s that green elephant! The situation is ideal for exploring and for meeting up with family and friends.

  • I think that I would visit the Edingbrugh or London one and id take my gorgeous fiance. We have both been to Edingbrugh and London seperatly and keep saying we will have a trip to these places together, due to us both having busy teacher lifestyles, often with different holidays time away together is rare at the moment. Something with the oppurtunity for lots of relaxation and quality time together would be perfect. I think the key to a good night sleep is to de stress beforehand and nice cup of herbal tea before bed.

  • Temple Court Hotel in London – just around the corner from where my partner is working so could surprise him – we don’t live in the same city so all time together is precious.

  • leanne weir

    I’d choose London

  • Wendy mclaughlin

I’d love to take my husband to the London one for some relaxation and recharge our batteries from two lovely twins ❤️

  • Reading your blog post had me daydreaming (only for 5 minutes!) about life pre-baby. Sleep ins, uninterrupted sleep, a HOT cup of tea, and some much needed R&R and one to own time with my husband. Don’t get me wrong, I love love my 9 month old to the moon and back, but a night away is good for the soul, for the mind… and for the love hormone 🙂
I’m also pregnant with my second (eek!) and so this post just sounds like heaven in a nutshell to me and I’d love the opportunity to visit the Alex Hotel in Bath for a date night in massive comfort and luxury.
    Here’s hoping..!

  • I’d choose London, would love a weekend away there

  • Cherry Edwards

I would choose Bath, it’s a hard choice because all the locations are fantastically rich and varied as far as travelling and sightseeing go.

Bath is the nearest to my home town but I can never get enough of it and I’ve only seen a little of it.

The rich variety of art, architecture, museums, eateries, markets and shopping could keep me occupied for years.

The history is engrossing and when you have had enough walking, talking and looking there is always the roof top spa to go and enjoy and get an altogether different view of the city.

A night in a Bath is always a treat for me.

I’d love to stay in Bath. I used to visit the area regularly when I lived in the Westcountry, but have not been back for years. It would be amazing to go and do all the touristy things I took for granted when it was on my doorstep. The Roman Baths, everything Jane Austin, a row on the river, maybe even a round of golf overlooking Victoria Park!

  • What a great competition! I’d love to take my boyfriend for a night in Edinburgh. He’s never been further North of Northumberland (say what?!) and I’d love to take him to Scotland. I’m 1/4 Scottish so this is an outrage that I have entertained for far too long.

I would love a stay in the Apex Temple Court London as both my children live and work in London and going up for the day takes too much time and is too stressful. Hi Jess,

I’d choose BATH! As a keen traveller, explorer and history buff, what’s not to love about stepping back in time and visiting the home of Roman Deity Sulis Minerva, to the legendary thermal baths to keep my winter body nice and warm! Those Romans are pretty impressive so I’m keen to delve into their history at Bath!

After visiting Florence this summer and walking across Ponte Vecchio with all its dainty shops & history, I’m playing ‘Bridge bingo’ and I have to visit Pulteney Bridge to tick it off my list as another incredibly designed bridge! Not only is it listed as a Grade 1 lists building itself, and has shops along the walkway, it’s survived the onslaught of German bombing in WW2 – no mean feat!

What’s even more attractive than the rich historical legacy Bath has left on the world is how dazzling its supposed to be at winter! Christmas markets, mulled wine and exploring the city, taking in its architecture and personality! With a lovely trip to Bath and staying at Apex Hotels, who knows, I could folllow in the footsteps of William Herschel and make another astronomical discovery like he did in Bath by gazing up at the winter sky at the Herschel Museum of astronomy!
