Staying at Lower Campscott Farm in North Devon

We recently stayed at Lower Campscott Farm, which offers unique child friendly accommodation in Devon, near Woolacombe and Ilfracombe. The farm has eight 4* self catering cottages, each one different from the next. The whole place is geared towards families with young children, allowing them to experience a real ‘farm holiday’, whilst being by the sea. I actually stumbled across Lower Campscott Farm during a search on Google Maps. I took one look at the website and immediately I could see it was exactly what we were looking for.

We paid full price for our stay and the hosts had no idea I was a travel blogger. I’m just a satisfied customer sharing my positive experience. I hope this review comes in useful for anyone looking for child friendly accommodation in Devon.

The Location

Lower Campscott Farm is located half way between Woolacombe and Ilfracombe and is in walking distance to the nearby Lee Bay. You can see the sea of Lee Bay in the distance, from the bedroom window of Granary Cottage (where we stayed). If you’re not familiar with the area, that basically means its in an excellent location.

It’s under 10 minutes drive from both Woolacombe and Ilfracombe. Woolacombe is one of the best Blue Flag beaches in the UK and Ilfracombe is a pretty harbour town with cobbled streets, tea rooms, boutique shops and is home to Damien Hirst’s famous Verity sculpture. The setting of Lower Camp Scott Farm itself is rural and located down a long private road, so having a car is essential when staying here.

The Experience

Lower Campscott farm is an entire ‘farm experience’ for little ones. Every morning they are invited to help feed the animals on the farm including goats, sheep, and shetland ponies. There is also a petting area where children can get up close and meet the rabbits and chickens. They can collect fresh eggs from the chicken pen and Farmer Tony’s tractor rides are a real highlight. All of these farm-based activities are free for guests and inclusive for the whole family (even grandparents!).

Theo absolutely loved feeding the goats and was completely mesmerised on the tractor ride. We got into a little morning routine of visiting all the animals, and I really liked that there were things to keep him entertained on-site. There is also an outdoor play area and an indoor games room, but unfortunately the indoor games room was closed due to Covid.

The Cottages

There are 8 cottages at Lower Campscott Farm, each catering for different family sizes. They range from 1 bed to 4 bed. We stayed in Granary Cottage which was a a three bedroom and two bathroom cottage with a separate living room and kitchen. It was very spacious and with 4 adults and one toddler, it did not feel at all cramped.

Like all good family-friendly accommodation, the cottages at Lower Campscott Farm come with everything you need for babies and toddlers. They supply all the essentials including a travel cot, high chair and a microwave. They can also supply thoughtful baby-proofing extras such as stair gates and plug socket covers, which I thought was amazing. We had stair gates at the top and the bottom of the stairs, so I had complete peace of mind during our stay.

Fabulous Home Cooked Meals

There is an on-site farm shop that sells a selection of fresh and local produce including sweet treats and Devonshire cider. The best thing about the farm shop is that it also sells home cooked meals which are absolutely delicious and definitely make your evenings a little easier (as well as catering for children, they’ve definitely considered tired parents who can’t be bothered to cook after a busy day out!)

The Grampus pub is also in walking distance from Lower Camp Scott Farm, which has a lovely beer garden in the summer months. We stopped here for my first Devonshire cider which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, my parents ate at The Grampus one night and said the food wasn’t anything special. Instead for food, I would recommend driving to The Jube in Woolacombe or The Thatched Inn in Ilfracombe for some excellent pub grub. We ate at both during our holiday.

A Family Run Business

Lower Camp Scott Farm is run by husband and wife Kathy and Tony, who live on site and are wonderful hosts. We felt incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived and nothing felt like too much trouble with them. It was lovely to stay somewhere that felt so friendly, well equipped and so perfectly geared towards our energetic toddler.

Lower Camp Scott farm is a family-friendly hidden gem in North Devon and I would recommend it to anyone with young children. It’s the perfect base to explore the beautiful coastlines of North Devonshire.
