The minimalist travel skincare routine for your 30’s

Travelista Editor Jessica Ruth Gibson shares her take on travel skincare routines in your 30’s and shares how she is drilling down to the essentials for a minimalist routine on the go.

I’ve travelled in my 20’s and I’ve travelled in my 30’s and I can say with confidence that one big difference is what my skin is willing to tolerate. It doesn’t bounce back from dehydration as fast, it feels more puffy when I drink alcohol and it’s less forgiving with broken sleep.

When a quick face wash and moisturiser would have sufficed in my 20’s, I now find myself packing eye serums, exfoliants, eye creams, SPFs and more for my travels – all of which feel like non negotiables now.

But this article isn’t about encouraging you to pack your 12-step routine or rose quartz gua sha for every trip and holiday. It’s about how to streamline your skincare for travels in your 30’s, without compromising on that all-important UV protection and dewy holiday glow.

Why your skin takes a hit on your travels

You’re likely to feel a change in your skin when you travel, but this will feel different depending on your environment. Firstly, plane cabins drop humidity to 10-20%. The Sahara Desert hits 25%, so this just shows you how drying that plane air can be on your skin.

Hotel air conditioning can also take its toll in terms of dryness, especially if you’re alternating in and out of the heat. When you add on increased UV rays or colder climes on the likes of a ski holiday, your skin can easily be pushed to its limits when you travel in your 30’s and beyond.

Let me share with you what works for me (a skincare loving travel girl, now in her mid-30’s).

Master the art of decanting

If you’re anything like me, you’ll have developed a bit of a skincare obsession in your early 30’s and you’ve discovered the sheer joy of using premium skincare products vs budget drugstore options. But with premium skincare usually comes beautiful packaging which can quickly add up in terms of space in your case and weight allowance. The skincare shelf will need to stay at home, but I do have a great solution for you.

I’ve previously talked about art of decanting as a space saving travel beauty hack . This involves transferring your favourite skincare products into smaller, stackable containers for travel. This way you can keep the core of your routine and products without compromising on space in your case.

My 3 travel skincare non-negotiables

The goal is not to bring everything on your skincare shelf, but to prioritise the products that are going to work the hardest for you whilst you’re away. Your three non-negotiables should be cleanser, treatment and SPF protection. Everything else is optional.

1. Cleanser

Cleanser needs to work harder when traveling. You’re (hopefully) piling on multiple layers of SPF throughout the day, dealing with possible city pollution and likely sweating more than usual in warmer climes. A quick face wipe or your Micellar water that works fine at home won’t cut it. Oil-based cleansers remove everything without stripping skin. Solid cleansing balms don’t count toward your liquid limit either, which frees up space. Either way, opt for a double cleanse on your travels. Once to lift away dirt and make up and a second to deep cleanse your pores.

2. Hydration Treatment (oil or moisturiser)

Treatment products matter most at night. Overnight is when products have the chance to absorb slowly and work on a deeper level whilst you sleep. It’s also when skin repairs itself. Help it on its way by opting for a deeply nourishing face treatment whilst you sleep.

One high-quality antiaging oil for facial skin handles multiple job; hydration, barrier repair, antioxidant protection. Oils also don’t evaporate in dry hotel air the way lighter moisturizers do. They create an actual seal that lasts through the night.

Look for ones with proven ingredients. CBD reduces inflammation from travel stress. Prickly pear and moringa oils deliver vitamins without feeling heavy. The clinical backing is important here. Products that show measurable hydration and firmness improvements justify the space in your case – and remember – you can always decant them.

3. SPF

Sun protection is an absolute non-negotiable, and I don’t mean slapping a bit of sun cream on your face as you apply your sun cream on the beach. I mean, applying it first thing in the morning as part of your minimalist travel skincare routine. I live in the UK and religiously wear SPF 365 days a year. So for me, SPF is the absolute most important skincare essential of all for women travelling in their 30’s and beyond. There’s no point spending money on expensive anti-aging products if you’re not trying to prevent fine lines in the first place. Prevention is better than the cure, and your skin is likely to be exposed to a much higher level of UVA and UVB rays whilst you’re travelling.

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide work better than chemical ones when you’re changing climates. They don’t break down in different temperatures and humidity levels. If you’re choosing between a fancy eye cream and high quality SPF, choose the SPF. Eye cream is a nice-to-have. Sun damage is permanent.

Prioritise multi-purpose products for minimalism and simplicity

Multi-purpose products are worth their weight in gold for a minimalist travel skincare routine. Tinted moisturiser with SPF combines three steps. Cream blush works on lips too. A good facial oil handles night treatment, emergency dry-patch repair, and nail cuticle care when you need it.

Solid skincare products are your friend. Think cleansing balms, shampoo bars, even some moisturisers now come in stick form. None of them count against your liquid allowance, they don’t leak, and they typically concentrate more active ingredients than liquid versions anyway.

Travel sizes of your favourite products are also often available, meaning you can take away the miniature version of what you know and love at home.  If you use it all up during your trip, that’s more space in your suitcase for your return journey.

Other lifestyle factors that can impact your skin when you travel

It’s not just the products you use on your skin that will impact how it looks when you travel. Lifestyle plays a big part, so if you want to prioritise your skin and achieve that restful holiday glow, consider these simple tips;

  • Try to get plenty of sleep during your travels. Aim for at least 8 hours a night
  • Drink lots of water – more than you’re used to at home.
  • Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum
  • Enjoy make-up free days. Let your skin breathe and enjoy the fresh air
  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables for a boost of Vitamin C on the go. Your skin will thank you for it.

Your three minute travel skincare evening routine

  1. Double cleanse. One minute per cleanse. You’ll remove the day without stripping your skin. If you’re using an oil cleanser, emulsify it with water before rinsing. That’s what actually lifts the gunk away.
  2. Apply your treatment oil to damp skin. This is the trick nobody mentions. Skin absorbs products better and seals in that extra moisture. Pat your face mostly dry after cleansing, leaving it slightly damp, then apply your oil. Four to five drops cover your face and neck.
