A Day Trip Guide to Richmond, North Yorkshire

Claire Kenny has fallen in love with the North Yorkshire market town, Richmond. Exclusively for Travelista, she shares her ultimate day trip guide to Richmond, and why she can’t stop visiting this special place.

Nestled on the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park against the stunning River Swale, Richmond, appeal as a market town appeal is obvious. But for me, its magic is far more than just cobbled streets and characterful corners. You can cram so much into a break in this beautiful Yorkshire town, from drinks in its variety of pubs and culinary adventures in its many restaurants, to retail therapy and stunning scenery. Richmond, North Yorkshire is the perfect place to visit, whether you go for a day trip, or decide to head for a weekend break.

Where to Eat: A Guide to the Best Restaurants in Richmond

From farm shop goodies and afternoon teas to fantastic Indian feasts, Richmond has a lovely mix of cuisines, and whether high end or no frills, everywhere is relaxed and informal. My favourites include:

Rustique

5-7 Chantry Wynd |, Finkle St, Richmond DL10 4QB

Rustique on Finkle Street for authentic, no-fuss French fare. As well as friendly staff, the setting feels like you’re eating al fresco on a cobbled Parisian street (so much so that I wonder if it’s named after the Rue Saint Rustique?)

Town Hall Pub

Market Place, Richmond DL10 4QL

The Town Hall pub for devouring something hearty while people-watching on the market square. Their Sunday roast is bang on and their desserts pack a real portion punch! It’s also right on the doorstep of Richmond Castle

The Royal India

3 Castle Hill, Richmond DL10 4QP

The Royal India for the nights when your feet are tired of walking and you fancy a takeaway. From soft, fluffy naans to rich, creamy curries, everything we order from here is faultless

Mocha

Trinity Church Square, Richmond DL10 4HY

You can also enjoy great coffee and home-made truffles at Mocha, and the fish and chips at Barkers are as good as anywhere on the coast, with lovely staff to boot.

The Coach House

Middleton Lodge, Kneeton Ln, Middleton Tyas, Richmond DL10 6NJ

If you want something really special, The Coach House at Middleton Lodge is not one to miss. As well as a fresh, modern menu, this Georgian estate is refined and understated but luxury washes over you in calming waves. Its tasteful décor and lush landscaping left me wanting an excuse to return, and an overnight stay and day in the award-winning spa (described by The Times as the height of sophistication) is now firmly on my bucket list!

Where to Walk in Richmond : Stunning Scenery by the River Swale

Whether you’re a hardcore hiker or a gentle ambler (I’m definitely the latter), Richmond is wonderful for those soul-soothing walks that make the world feel like a better place. We all know Yorkshire has an abundance of history and culture, and Richmond packs a huge historical punch.

My advice would be to get close to the River Swale where you can easily orientate yourself towards the magnificent Richmond Castle (so magnificent that you can see its splendour from almost everywhere). It’s breathtaking, with the keep and much of the 11th-century surrounding wall intact along with many of the castle’s main buildings. I found it mind blowing to stand in the remains of the great hall and see the skeletal structure of the inner apartments enjoyed by successive lords of Richmond. If you want more history, why not walk from the Castle to Easby Abbey? This is just over three miles both ways on pretty flat, straightforward terrain, and the Abbey itself is stunning and feels really special and secluded.

Slightly further afield, a trip to Fountains Abbey is an absolute must. As the largest monastic ruins in England, it’s inconceivable that this sprawling gem, which looks like something from a fantasy novel, stemmed from the desire of 13 Benedictine monks from York who wanted a simpler life.

Where to shop in Richmond, North Yorkshire : The Best Independent Finds

One of my holiday traditions is to treat myself to something that will make my home more beautiful when I return. Luckily, Richmond excels in interiors, with Grey’s in particular a must-visit. Elegant, opulent and beautifully laid out, it’s the go-to place for luxury soft furnishings and home accessories. And don’t overlook Bb in Finkle for vintage finds, bespoke items and pieces by artists and makers. Finally, Mainsgill Farm Shop has it all. The top floor has the most amazing selection of interiors finds, while the bottom floor is the Selfridges Food Hall of the north. Browse fresh, locally sourced food that sings with flavour, and add an off the shelf freshly boxed picnic or afternoon tea to your trolley too.

Where to Stay in Richmond, North Yorkshire

If like me your staycations are your main holiday, you might prefer accommodation with a wow factor. I’ve found choosing a property with a hot tub to be a real game changer, offering a wonderful focal point if some days you want to simply enjoy your accommodation. Sipping my morning coffee or evening drink in the cool air and warm bubbles felt like being in my own spa, and the little corner of paradise at the bottom of our private courtyard garden quickly became the centre of my holiday universe.

Browse and book hotels in Richmond.

Greenbank Barns

For group stays, I’d highly recommend Greenbank Barns, with its generous proportions, choice of seating areas and views across the Dales. There’s even a games room. I’ve also stayed at and can recommend The Old Potting Shed, which is available to book from Holiday at Home.

Middleton Lodge

If you’re looking for a little bit of luxury, look no further than Middleton Lodge. With a forest spa, a gorgeous restaurant, and lots of different types of accommodation. From cosy cottages to luxurious rooms to incredible huts, Middleton Lodge is an idyllic paradise for you to escape to.

No20 Frenchgate

If you prefer to book out your own apartment, No20 Frenchgate is the perfect place to stay on your trip to Richmond. This cosy apartment is budget-friendly and just a stone throw away from Richmond Castle.

The Frenchgate Hotel

The Frenchgate Hotel is a boutique hotel in the heart of Richmond, with incredibly unique rooms. You may find a huge 1.5 ton solid oak 4 poster bed, free standing Victorian bath, or an original fireplace. The hotel has private gardens, and many of the rooms overlook them, giving you a tranquil escape.

Falling in love with a place is like falling in love with a person – it just happens. And I’m pretty sure that with Richmond, I’m in it for the long haul.
